Brussels – A spokesperson for the European Commission, Paula Pinho, announced that “the president is recovering well and is currently at her home in Hanover, Germany.” She is anticipated to resume her “appointments (…) by the end of the week,” prior to her scheduled engagements next week, Pinho stated.
Ursula von der Leyen is set to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which will take place from January 20 to 24, as well as the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg from January 20 to 23.
The postponed visit of the European Commission to Poland is now rescheduled for February 6 and 7. Poland has held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union since the beginning of January and will continue for six months.
While still in recovery, Ursula von der Leyen will not preside over the European commissioners’ meeting on Wednesday. Vice-President Teresa Ribera will take charge in her absence.
The Commission confirmed on Friday that its German president had recently returned home after a week-long hospitalization.
Notably, the Commission had not previously disclosed this hospitalization and maintained that Ursula von der Leyen continued to fulfill her duties remotely, ensuring “close and daily contact with her team.” (January 13, 2025)
