While on holiday in the U.K., Vance spent Saturday at the retreat of U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy, where he met with Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov and Andriy Yermak, the head of Zelenskyy’s office.
On Sunday, Vance expressed a traditional stance on Fox News, stating, “We’re done with the funding of the Ukraine war business. Americans are tired of sending their tax dollars to this conflict. If Europeans want to buy weapons from American producers, that’s fine, but we will not fund it ourselves anymore.”
This doesn’t suggest increased U.S. interest in post-war security guarantees.
However, the idea of being peacemakers seems to be gaining traction in the administration. Vance later remarked at a British air base on Wednesday that Trump “said very simply that we are committed to bringing peace to Europe once again.”
Played by Putin
Jan Techau, head of Germany for Eurasia Group, warned that Trump entered the meeting with Europeans having different objectives.
For Trump, it’s crucial not to emerge from the Alaska summit appearing as a “loser.” The implication that Putin could outsmart him stirs his anger on his Truth Social account.
