EU Holds Off on Responding to New Trump Tariffs Pending U.S. Call

BRUSSELS (ANP/RTR) – On Friday, the U.S. President made a surprising announcement of a 50 percent import tariff on European goods. This comes amidst ongoing negotiations between the EU and the U.S. aimed at reducing overall import tariffs, which had recently been lowered from 20 to 10 percent for a three-month period.

The European Commission also declared a 90-day suspension on imposing import duties on a selection of American products. This moratorium is set to last until July 14, though its current status remains uncertain.

Trump justified the steep tariff by claiming that negotiations had stalled. The European Commission, however, has refrained from engaging in further talks in recent weeks while negotiations are still underway.

In response to the tariff threat from President Trump, European ministers are reiterating that trade discussions between the United States and the European Union are ongoing. Polish Trade Minister Michał Baranowski stated, “The European Union and the United States are negotiating.”

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s support for the EU in its negotiations with Washington, adding that such import tariffs would be detrimental. “They would only hinder economic growth in both markets,” he noted.

Trump’s unexpected announcement of a 50 percent import tariff on EU goods underscores the ongoing tensions in trade discussions, which had previously seen tariffs reduced from 20 to 10 percent.
