EU Foreign Affairs Council to Tackle Major Global Security Challenges
Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting will focus on key issues such as Ukraine, Georgia, the Middle East, Africa, defence capabilities, and EU-US relations, emphasizing security, policy alignment, and global cooperation.
Key Priorities for the Foreign Affairs Council
The meeting, presided over by Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, will span two days. The Council is responsible for overseeing the EU’s external policies, including foreign relations, defence, security, trade, development aid, and humanitarian efforts.
According to the European Council, the session on 18 November 2024 will open with discussions on the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha will join via videoconference to provide an update. The Council will then shift its attention to Georgia, followed by a working lunch focusing on relations between the EU and the US. During the afternoon, the Council will assess the situations in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa, along with updates on other pressing global events.
On the second day, EU Defence Ministers will convene to discuss continued support for Ukraine. They will exchange views with Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, as well as President Zelenskyy’s strategic advisor, Alexander Kamyshin, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Other topics on the agenda include defence readiness, the EU Rapid Deployment Capacity, and the PESCO Strategic Review.
Ensuring Consistency in EU Foreign Policy
The Foreign Affairs Council, in coordination with the European Commission and under the guidance of the High Representative, plays a crucial role in maintaining the unity, consistency, and effectiveness of the EU’s external policies. It is instrumental in representing and executing the EU’s foreign and security strategies, as outlined by the European Council.
The Council’s responsibilities include launching civil and military crisis management operations in pursuit of the EU’s peace and security objectives. Additionally, the Council can implement foreign policy measures, such as sanctions, to enforce EU-wide decisions and maintain global stability.
