The “EU for Schools” initiative, funded by the European Union and executed by UNDP in Albania, has significantly revitalized educational facilities that were affected by the earthquake on November 26, 2019.
With an investment of 75 million euros, the EU has established modern standards to provide Albanian children and students with safe and dignified infrastructure tailored to their educational needs.
As of now, the EU delegation has reported the completion of 59 schools across 11 municipalities in Albania.
This initiative emerged from an international donors’ conference for Albania, held on February 17, 2020, organized by the European Union in Brussels. The “Together for Albania” campaign aimed to aid the country’s reconstruction efforts following the catastrophic earthquake.
In this framework, the “EU4Schools” program was initiated, backed by the EU’s 75 million euro funding, and implemented by UNDP in collaboration with the Albanian government. Approximately 25,000 students, teachers, and children stand to benefit from this project.
“EU4Schools” has focused on the reconstruction or repair of 60 educational facilities, including nurseries, kindergartens, primary and high schools, as well as dormitories in the 11 municipalities most impacted by the earthquake, namely Krujë, Durrës, Kurbin, Kamzë, Kavajë, Tirana, Mirditë, Lezhë, Rrogozhinë, Shijak, and Vorë.
Additionally, the project contributes to Albania’s progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. (January 17)
