EFSA Obtains EU Mandate to Examine Microplastics

Brussels – The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) will conduct an investigation into the potential health risks associated with microplastics in the air, food, and water.

“It is positive that EFSA has been assigned this task, as there is still a significant lack of understanding in this field,” stated Salomon Sand, a toxicologist with the Swedish National Food Agency, in a press release.

EFSA, which received the mandate from the EU Parliament, will establish a scientific foundation. The authority will examine methods to measure the presence of microplastics in food and explore how they enter and impact the human body.

The investigation is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2027.

Oh great, just what we needed—another five years of research to find out if those tiny bits of plastic in our dinner are more dangerous than the actual dinner itself. 🍽️💁‍♂️ Let’s hope they won’t take a decade to tell us to stop eating off the floor!

Looks like EFSA’s taken a break from the usual bureaucratic tango to tackle microplastics—wonder if they’ll find any in their coffee first? ☕️😂 2027 is just around the corner, isn’t it? #EuroTime
