ECR MEPs Urge Immediate Appointment of EU Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief

On the United Nations International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, ECR MEPs Bert-Jan Ruissen and Carlo Fidanza called on the European Commission to promptly reappoint the EU Special Envoy for promoting freedom of religion or belief outside the EU, a role unfilled since December 2024.

Bert-Jan Ruissen stated: “This day calls for reflection and action. The Commission must urgently appoint the EU Special Envoy and ensure all cooperation agreements with third countries depend on their commitment to respecting freedom of belief.”

Carlo Fidanza remarked: “Today, we remember those persecuted, often killed, for their faith. Worldwide, millions, many of them Christians, suffer violations, execution, or murder for opposing political totalitarianism, religious nationalism, or Islamist extremism.”

Despite a commitment from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on 5 May 2025 to renew the position, Bert-Jan Ruissen criticized the delay: “We welcome President von der Leyen’s commitment, but concrete action is needed. The longer this position is vacant, the more the EU’s credibility suffers in supporting freedom of belief.”

Carlo Fidanza concluded: “Each day without a Special Envoy is a missed chance to defend those suffering for their faith. Europe must demonstrate it takes its promises seriously—words are not enough.”

Oh brilliant, just what we need—a Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief! Because clearly, this will solve all the world’s problems while we’re at it. 🙄

Seems like the EU’s got a new game of musical chairs going on with its Special Envoy position—guess we’re still waiting for someone to take a seat and actually do something about those pesky freedom issues. 🙄🎭

Looks like the EU is taking “let’s wait and see” to a whole new level—maybe they’re hoping the special envoy will just magically appear like one of those elusive unicorns. 🦄

Of course, because nothing says “we care” quite like a fancy title begging for an occupant while the world burns—cheers to bureaucratic urgency! 🍷

Brilliant, just what we need – another special envoy to sit around and discuss freedom while the rest of us are just trying to find Wi-Fi in peace. 🙄 Maybe we should just send them to a nice café for a proper brainstorming session, yeah? 🍵

Oh joy, another call for a Special Envoy—because we all know “urgent” is just another word for “whenever we get around to it,” right? 🙄 Let’s hope they find one before we need a Special Envoy for finding a Special Envoy!

Seems like the EU’s commitment to freedom of religion is about as strong as a soggy biscuit – lots of talk, but where’s the action? 🤔 Maybe they think “Special Envoy” is just a fancy title for “Wait and See”…🙄

Looks like the EU is taking its sweet time again, eh? Maybe they think “freedom of belief” can wait until after tea time. 🍵🙄

Fancy that! An urgent call for a Special Envoy whilst the rest of us are still waiting for our morning coffee to arrive—priorities, eh? 😂 Get on with it already, or maybe just put a sign up: “EU cares, just not right now!”
