The European Supervisory Authorities (EBA, EIOPA, and ESMA – the ESAs) have released a statement advocating for a cross-sectoral, risk-based, and consistent supervisory strategy to address ICT risks from frontier AI models.
The statement considers current regulatory frameworks, the European Commission’s Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence Action Plan, and updates from the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM), among other authorities.
The ESAs propose strategies for financial entities to enhance their operational resilience to cyber risks associated with frontier AI models, focusing on risk prevention, detection, and management.
The statement stresses the importance of strong governance and risk management frameworks within financial entities to effectively manage and mitigate cyber risks tied to frontier AI models. It also provides updates on ongoing and planned DORA oversight activities for critical ICT third-party providers (CTPPs) to tackle these risks.
The ESAs urge financial entities and relevant authorities to use this statement as a foundation for supervisory discussions, reflecting existing supervisory standards. Such an approach aims to ensure the EU financial system remains resilient to risks posed by frontier AI technologies.
