E40 in Zwijnaarde Closed Tonight for Traffic Booth Installation

Ghent (Eurotoday) – In Zwijnaarde, Ghent, the E40 will close for about 4 hours on December 2‑3, 2025, for the Roads and Traffic Agency to install a 10×4.5 m traffic cabin delivered by 6 trucks.

As VRT News reported, in Zwijnaarde, Ghent, in the province of East Flanders, Belgium, the E40 will be closed for about 4 hours during the night of December 2nd to 3rd, 2025. The Roads and Traffic Agency will install a new traffic control booth on the highway. The booth is a large precast concrete structure that needs to be delivered by special transport because of its size and weight.

What is happening on the E40 in Zwijnaarde with the new traffic cabin?

Officials mentioned that the structure was prefabricated in a workshop in Wallonia and later assembled on site. All parts were delivered by a convoy of 6 trucks, and a special crane was used to place the cabin. The structure measures 10 meters long and 4.5 meters wide. It will be used to measure and control traffic flows.

The installation required a full closure of the E40 towards Ostend, from the Zwijnaarde interchange to the Sint-Denijs-Westrem exit. Drivers coming from Brussels and Kortrijk will be redirected via the E17, the R4, and the Loop. Clear signs will guide motorists along the detour. In addition, the Kortrijk sesteenweg near the E40 exit will be temporarily closed for a short period.

The E40 and E17 near Zwijnaarde have been under renovation since spring 2023. The work is part of a larger plan to update old infrastructure, including bridges, viaducts, and road surfaces. The interchange first opened in 1972 and has needed upgrades to handle modern traffic safely. Renovations have been carried out in stages, with temporary closures and detours for drivers.
