Dutch Chips Executive Criticizes EU for AI Overregulation

The comments — made during a campaign event for the Dutch center-right party Christian Democratic Appeal ahead of national elections on October 29 — are another challenge to the EU’s embattled artificial intelligence law.

ASML, Europe’s leading tech company by market cap, has been advocating for a pause on the parts of the law that are not yet implemented. In July, the company’s executives signed a letter from 46 companies calling for a two-year pause.

The company in September became the largest shareholder of French AI company Mistral with a €1.3 billion investment, enhancing ASML’s influence over the EU’s approach to AI companies.

Dassen also criticized the lack of protection Europe’s leading companies are receiving amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

“You should ask the Airbuses, the Nokias, the ASMLs … whether they feel protected by Europe at all times in this huge power struggle between the United States and China.

“The answer won’t always be yes,” he said.

Typical, innit? While we’re all busy trying to figure out how to boil water without regulations, our tech giants are asking for a breather. Maybe the EU’s idea of ‘protection’ is just a fancy way to say ‘good luck, mate!’ 😏
