UK Approves Purchase of the Telegraph by POLITICO Owner Axel Springer

LONDON — U.K. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy announced on Tuesday that she will not block Axel Springer’s acquisition of the U.K.’s Telegraph Media Group, facilitating a significant ownership transition for the newspaper.

In a statement to parliament, Nandy mentioned she doesn’t intend to interfere with the merger between Axel Springer, POLITICO’s owner, and the Telegraph, based on the current evidence.

Axel Springer described this green light as a “significant milestone” in the transaction process. Although regulatory approval is still pending in Ireland and Austria, the deal is anticipated to conclude in the year’s second quarter.

Mathias Döpfner, Axel Springer’s Chief Executive, expressed satisfaction with the U.K. government’s approval, noting plans for substantial investment in The Telegraph’s editorial quality and global reach following a period of uncertainty.

The acquisition, initially announced in March, was scrutinized by the U.K.’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport for its competition and foreign influence implications, given the German company’s interest in the right-leaning British publication.

Axel Springer was not the only contender; the Daily Mail & General Trust had also made a £500 million acquisition offer.

Guess the U.K. government decided that letting a German company run a British newspaper is just what we need to spice up the Brexit saga. Can’t wait to see how “unbiased” the editorial quality will be! 😏📄

  4. Seems like the Telegraph is getting a new home—who knew a German company had such a keen interest in British tea and crumpets? 🍵🇩🇪 Good luck with that “editorial quality” upgrade; might need more than a sprinkle of Deutsche efficiency! 😂

  5. So, the Telegraph’s getting a new German boss, eh? I suppose next, they’ll be serving bratwurst at the front desk instead of bacon sarnies. 😂

Seems like the U.K. is handing over the keys to the Telegraph faster than a London cabbie can say “fair fare.” Can’t wait for the headlines—“Axel Springer: Now Serving Up Quality News with a Side of Sauerkraut!” 😂📅

Looks like the U.K. government has decided that foreign ownership of a British paper is as harmless as a pint of lukewarm lager. 🥴 Can’t wait to see how “significant” this milestone turns out when the headlines start to look more like a Eurotrash blog than a respected newspaper!
