European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who has a background in medicine, stepped up to assist during a mid-flight medical emergency on Wednesday. The incident occurred as she was traveling back to Brussels from the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Von der Leyen provided aid to a passenger in distress on a flight between Zurich and Brussels, following a call from the airline crew requesting assistance from anyone with medical expertise, according to Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta.
“In such situations, airline personnel ask if any passengers have medical knowledge,” explained Podesta. “The president responded and rendered assistance to the patient until the flight landed, at which point medical professionals took over.”
Before entering politics, von der Leyen pursued a career in medicine. She initially worked as an assistant physician and later earned her medical degree from Hanover Medical School.
The Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten was the first to report on the incident.
