Bucharest – Fiscal sustainability is crucial for economic growth, stability, and improving living standards, stated Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Economy, following his meeting with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan at the Victoria Palace on Tuesday.
The Latvian politician remarked that while Romania’s economy has shown good performance over the past decade, the rising budget and current account deficits are concerning. He noted that last year, the deficit reached 9.3% of GDP, the highest in the European Union. “Courageous measures are necessary to rectify this situation and mitigate Romania’s vulnerabilities,” he stressed.
Valdis Dombrovskis indicated that the European Commission expects this year’s budget deficit to be no more than 8.4%, and emphasized the importance of adhering to the deficit target for 2026 to build on Romania’s positive achievements.
Furthermore, the European official highlighted the significance of adhering to the commitments set forth in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). He noted that in addition to NRRP funds, Romania can expect considerable support from the EU through cohesion funds, the SAFE program for defense, and the long-term European budget in the coming years. “It is vital for Romania to ensure coherent, stable, and transparent mechanisms for utilizing these resources,” concluded Dombrovskis.
