Disgraced EU Lawmaker Kartheiser to Hold Talks with Kremlin Officials in Moscow

The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group has strongly denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and most of its members firmly support providing military aid to Kyiv.

For several months, ECR leadership has been deliberating whether to expel MEP Jacques-Yves Kartheiser over his pro-Russian views.

“If he travels [to Moscow], I will formally propose his removal from the group,” ECR co-chair Patryk Jaki told POLITICO.

Jaki, a member of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), stressed that ECR—particularly PiS—has long stood against attempts to reset relations with Moscow. “We opposed the Nord Stream pipeline initiatives and the broader trend across Europe of engaging in political resets with Russia before the war in Ukraine,” Jaki said.

European Parliament spokesperson Delphine Colard emphasized that any members visiting Moscow are doing so independently, not in an official capacity.

Earlier in May, amid Russia’s “Victory Day” commemorations, Cypriot non-aligned MEP Fidias Panayiotou traveled to Moscow alongside lawmakers from Germany’s Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), Slovakia’s SMER party, and the Czech Republic.

Their visit drew sharp criticism from European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and the heads of the major political groups. Renew Europe’s president even demanded an investigation into whether any European Parliament funds were improperly used to support the trip.

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “I stand by my principles” quite like a little chit-chat in Moscow, eh? If only he’d booked a one-way ticket to the Gulag instead, that might’ve earned him some respect! 😂✈️

Oh, brilliant move, Kartheiser! Nothing screams “I totally get the situation” quite like a nice little chat with Putin while the rest of us are busy sending aid to Ukraine. I suppose he’s planning to sell him a few ‘peace talks’ as a souvenir, huh? 🤦‍♂️

Isn’t it just delightful when a so-called “lawmaker” decides to take a wee jaunt to Moscow while the rest of us are busy trying to figure out how to spell “sanctions”? 🤦‍♂️ Maybe he thinks he’s auditioning for a reality show called “Who Wants to Be a ~Comrade~ European?” 🧐

Looks like Kartheiser’s got a one-way ticket to the Kremlin—maybe he’s hoping to pick up some tips on how to make friends and influence people, eh? 😏 It’s all a bit rich, innit? Perhaps next he’ll be writing a travel guide: “How to Win Friends and Alienate Allies!”

Looks like Kartheiser’s taken a masterclass in diplomacy—straight from the “How to Win Friends and Influence Putin” handbook. 🤦‍♂️ Next, he’ll be hosting a tea party at the Kremlin, I suppose! 🍵

Oh, so Kartheiser is off to Moscow for a little tête-à-tête with his favourite pals, eh? 🤔 I guess the ECR really knows how to spice up their diplomatic blunders—who needs a vacation in the sun when you can chat up Kremlin officials instead? 😂

Oh brilliant, just what we need—a lawmaker with a flair for diplomacy who thinks a coffee chat with the Kremlin is going to solve everything. Because nothing says “I care about Ukraine” quite like a cheeky trip to Moscow, eh? 🥴💼

Oh, fantastic! Just what we need—an EU lawmaker taking a scenic trip to Moscow while the rest of us are busy trying to keep our countries from resembling a bad soap opera! 🥴 I can already hear the “Diplomatic Strategy of the Year” trophy being engraved for him… or maybe not! 😂
