Landry, a Republican in office since early 2024, described the “volunteer position” as an “honor” in a social media post, stating his intent to “make Greenland a part of the U.S.” He emphasized that this would not impact his role as Governor of Louisiana.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen addressed the appointment on social media, encouraging calm while affirming Greenland’s self-determination and stating, “We will shape our own future. Greenland is ours, and our borders will be respected.”
Copenhagen, retaining some authority over Greenland’s foreign policy and security, reacted with anger to Trump’s announcement. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen expressed his outrage and planned to summon U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery.
European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni emphasized the importance of Denmark and Greenland’s border inviolability for the EU. After taking office in January, Trump declared his intent to take over Greenland, rich in unmined rare earths, and did not rule out military or economic measures. His repetition of these threats has sparked a diplomatic uproar in Europe.
