Four suspects detained after blazes were allegedly started across ten locations
Croatian police have detained four individuals suspected of intentionally igniting fires at ten sites in Zadar County, prompting urgent public safety concerns as prosecutors deliberate on charges. The fires were reportedly coordinated, though final legal classification is pending.
Fires reported across Zadar County
The Zadar Police Administration identified the suspects as three Croatian citizens, aged 46, 45, and 42, and a 33-year-old Polish citizen. They were arrested shortly after 20:00 on 15 August, following a report of fire-setting beside a road in the Benkovac area.
According to the official police report, the four allegedly acted with a prior plan on 14 and 15 August, using an open flame or combustible material lit with a lighter to start the fires.
Affected areas included Zadar’s Bili Brig district, Zemunik Donji, Galovac, Donje Biljane, Zapužane, Zemunik, Zagrad, Lišane Tinjske, Škabrnja, and Benkovac. Inspections revealed a destroyed parked car in Bili Brig and 43 olive trees lost between Škabrnja and Zemunik Donji. Firefighters, assisted by aerial units, extinguished the blazes, with damage assessments ongoing.
A civilian report triggered the arrests
The arrests highlight the importance of public reporting during high fire risk periods. A civilian alert led police to quickly identify a vehicle with Zadar registration plates and locate the four occupants.
Subsequent searches in homes, premises, and vehicles under a court warrant led to the seizure of a semi-automatic rifle and 44 rounds of ammunition from one suspect, and a pistol and mobile devices from another. These discoveries are part of the ongoing investigation and do not alone establish the motive for the fires.
All four suspects are now under police custody supervision, with a criminal complaint filed with the Zadar municipal prosecutor’s office.
Legal classification remains open
Croatia’s chief state prosecutor, Ivan Turudić, noted that terrorism hadn’t been excluded as a classification, but motive and circumstances must be established first. His comments, covered in Croatian media, stopped short of labeling the suspects as terrorists.
This distinction is critical both legally and journalistically. Police allege coordinated actions to endanger lives and property, but guilt is yet to be determined by a court. Charges will depend on proof of intent and motive.
Authorities are also probing other fires in Croatia, such as the one near Omiš. The Zadar police statement does not link the detained suspects to that separate fire, and incidents should not be conflated without evidence.
Speculation risks inflaming old divisions
The case has sparked intense online discussion regarding the suspects’ backgrounds and potential political motives. The police statement mentions citizenship but avoids attributing an ethnic, nationalist, or geopolitical motive.
Unfounded claims risk turning an investigation into collective accusations against communities. Croatia and Serbia continue to face the social consequences of the 1990s wars, making precision crucial when identity is debated publicly.
Accountability should remain individual and evidence-based, ensuring suspects receive due process, while residents, landowners, and emergency workers deserve a thorough investigation into actions that risked lives, homes, and livelihoods.
