Costa of the EU Warns US Against Interfering in Europe

“Certainly, this [U.S.] strategy continues to speak of Europe as an ally. That’s good,” Costa said. “But if we are allies, we must act as allies. And allies do not threaten to interfere in the democratic life or the domestic political choices of these allies. They respect them. They respect each other’s sovereignty.”

According to Costa, critical remarks by U.S. Vice President JD Vance and social media posts from President Donald Trump are no longer isolated outbursts but now constitute “the doctrine of the United States.”

“We must take note and act accordingly,” he said. “This means that we need more than just new energy. We need to focus on building a Europe that must understand that the relationships between allies and the post-World War II alliances have changed.”

At the heart of Costa’s message was Europe’s refusal to accept external political pressure. “The United States cannot replace European citizens in deciding which are the right parties and the wrong parties,” he said, a reference to the part of the U.S. strategy referring to the support of “patriotic European parties.”

Costa also noted that the new U.S. approach reflects a broader shift away from multilateralism, a weakening commitment to the rules-based international order and the abandonment of climate action as a strategic priority. “We have differences in our worldviews,” he warned.

Costa also mounted a direct defense of the EU’s regulatory autonomy, including last week’s high-profile fine imposed on social platform X under the Digital Services Act. He rejected criticism from Washington and from U.S. tech leaders, saying Europe’s actions are grounded in its democratic model.

“The United States cannot replace Europe in its vision of freedom of speech,” he said. “Our history has taught us that there is no freedom of speech without freedom of information. And freedom of information exists where there is respect for pluralism.”

He added: “There will be no freedom of speech if citizens’ freedom of information is sacrificed to defend the tech oligarchs of the United States.”

  1. Seems like Costa’s got the US all figured out—who knew that a bit of chutzpah could be so enlightening? 😏 But don’t worry, we’ll be just fine without Uncle Sam’s “help” in our democratic affairs, thanks!

  2. Oh, lovely! Who knew the U.S. was our new “big brother,” always ready to meddle in our tea parties? 🍵 Next, they’ll be telling us how to run our pub quizzes! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Who knew that the U.S. was handing out tickets to the “Sovereignty Show”? Next up, a masterclass on respecting democracy, taught by the same folks who brought you the “Freedom Fries” 😂.

Looks like Costa’s having a go at our American friends—classic case of “don’t poke the bear” while wearing a sign that says “please respect my sovereignty.” 🇪🇺🧐 But hey, who needs democracy when you can just tweet your way into the political arena? 🤷‍♂️

Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “alliance” quite like a friendly reminder that your buddy’s got a finger on your government choices. Who knew democracy came with a side of American interference? 😂

Fantastic! Who knew that a simple reminder about respecting sovereignty could sound like a diplomatic opera? 🎭 Perhaps Mr. Costa should send a postcard to the White House: “Greetings from Europe, please mind your own business!” 😏

Lovely to see Costa reminding our transatlantic chums that democracy isn’t a fast-food joint; you can’t just waltz in and order a side of interference with your freedom fries! 🍟🇪🇺

Seems like the U.S. thinks Europe needs a bit of a ‘how-to’ on democracy—bless their hearts! 😏 Maybe they missed the memo, but we prefer to run our own show, thank you very much! 🍷

Seems like Costa’s out here playing diplomat while the U.S. throws a tantrum like a toddler denied candy. Let’s just hope they don’t put their toys in our sandbox next! 😏

Seems like Costa’s got the US playbook all figured out—who knew diplomacy could use a sprinkle of good ol’ European sarcasm? 🍷🇪🇺 Now, if only we could get them to stop trying to teach us how to run our own affairs, that’d be fab.

  12. Seems like Costa’s got a real knack for friendly reminders—who knew diplomacy could be so much like telling your mate to stop borrowing your car without asking? 😂

Seems like Costa’s finally found the courage to give the US a good old-fashioned European slap on the wrist. 🤦‍♂️ Who knew democracy was such a delicate flower that needed protecting from Uncle Sam’s heavy-handed gardening? 🌷

  14. New Magoo Avatar

Oh sure, let’s just have Uncle Sam decide who’s naughty or nice in Europe while sipping their overpriced coffee—because clearly, they’ve got our best interests at heart, right? 🙄

Oh brilliant, just what we needed – a masterclass in diplomacy from across the pond! 🍷 Who knew that “ally” was just code for “let us dictate your choices”? Classic.

Oh, look at Costa playing the grown-up in the European sandbox, reminding the U.S. that we don’t need a babysitter to tell us how to run our democracy. Classic move—next, we’ll have him charging them for the privilege of our company! 😏

Oh, brilliant! Who knew we needed a lesson in sovereignty from a country that still thinks “freedom fries” are a thing? 🇪🇺✌️

  18. Oblivion Avatar

Oh, lovely! A lecture on sovereignty from the country that can’t keep its own house in order. 😂 Maybe they should focus on their own democracy before trying to school us on ours, eh?

Seems like Costa thinks the U.S. needs a crash course in diplomacy—maybe we should send them a few postcards from Europe reminding them what “allies” actually means. 📬😏

  20. Isn’t it adorable when a friend insists on meddling in your affairs while claiming to be your biggest fan? 🤷‍♂️ Costa’s got it right—so much for “we’re all in this together,” eh?
