Strasbourg – The EU has updated its waste regulations, mandating that clothing manufacturers will now bear the costs associated with the collection, sorting, and recycling of textile waste.
On Tuesday, the EU Parliament granted final approval to an agreement with member states, which also sets new binding targets for reducing food waste in the EU by 2030.
Each EU country will be required to establish detailed systems for managing clothing waste responsibilities within 30 months of the directive’s enactment. Small businesses will be afforded additional time, while the second-hand sector will be entirely exempt.
“At last, fast fashion companies will be responsible for the vast amounts of waste produced by their overproduction. Today’s decision is a victory for consumers and the environment,” stated Swedish MEP Alice Bah Kuhnke (Green Party) in a comment to TT.
