The Trump Administration’s massive ICE deportations in Chicago, Operation Midway Blitz, began back in September 8. It did not take long for citizens of Chicago to take to the streets and protest against the major immigration crackdown taking place in their city. Protestors have shown their disdain for the presence of ICE by demonstrating in an ICE facility in the Chicago suburb of Broadview, where they’ve clashed with the police. They’ve sat on the ground to prevent ICE vehicles from taking detainees inside the facility. The demonstrations were met with aggression, ICE agents resorting to the use of physical force, rubber bullets, and tear gas.
On October 4, various cars rammed into ICE patrol vehicles, resulting in 30-year-old woman, Marimar Martinez, being shot by agents who were “forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots” claims Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin. The altercation escalated into a full-blown protest where agents used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse protestors. Martinez was charged for assault and attempted murder of a federal employee, alongside 21-year-old Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, who was driving one of the vehicles that clashed against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Deployment of National Guard
The repeated confrontations and backlash from Chicagoans exasperated Republican President Donald Trump, who pressured Illinois Governor, J.B. Pritzker, to deploy the National Guard. Pritzker labelled the idea of deploying military troops into the city as “absolutely outrageous and un-American”. Trump responded by authorizing more than 500 National Guard troops, 300 from Illinois, 200 from Texas, and 14 from California in an effort to protect federal officers and assets.
The attempt was swiftly blocked on Thursday by U.S. District Court Judge April Perry of the Northern District of Illinois, who filed a temporary 14-day restraining order against President Trump, Secretary of War (previously known as Secretary of Defense) Pete Hegseth, and other members of the administration from deploying the National Guard into the state.
The legal battle in the appeals court continues, with the federalization of the troops being allowed in the state, but not the deployment. Thus, the hundreds of troops remain at a military facility in Joliet, Illinois, more than 70 kilometers away from Chicago. The Trump Administration is persistent on the dispatch of troops into the Windy City. Vice President J.D. Vance has insisted
“We’re obviously going to litigate this as much as we can.”
Operation Midway Blitz targeted against J.B Pritzker
The friction between Governor Pritzker and the Trump administration is not something new. In fact, the Department of Homeland Security launched Operation Midway Blitz as a direct attack on Pritzker’s policies. When ICE launched the campaign back in September, McLaughlin stated,
“For years, Governor Pritzker and his fellow sanctuary politicians released Tren de Aragua gang members, rapists, kidnappers, and drug traffickers on Chicago’s streets—putting American lives at risk and making Chicago a magnet for criminals. President Trump and Secretary Noem have a clear message: no city is a safe haven for criminal illegal aliens. If you come to our country illegally and break our laws, we will hunt you down, arrest you, deport you, and you will never return.”
No End in Sight
Throughout this campaign, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has now shot and killed a man, detained children alongside U.S. citizens, and detained various local
journalists. Despite locals stating that the operation would only last

What a brilliant strategy, sending in the National Guard to a city that clearly needs less chaos. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of military presence to spice up the neighborhood? 🤷♂️
-
Isn’t it just delightful to see the Windy City turn into a scene straight outta a dystopian film? Who needs Hollywood when you’ve got political theater like this? 🍿
-
Looks like Chicago’s become the set of a bad action flick, where the plot twist is that the villains are actually the ones in uniform. I suppose a little chaos never hurt anyone—just adds to the city’s ‘character’, right? 😏
-
Looks like Chicago’s having a little spat with Uncle Sam over immigration—who knew the Windy City was the new hotbed for a political soap opera? 🍿 Might as well grab a pint and enjoy the show while the National Guard sits on the sidelines like a bunch of bored tourists.
-
Looks like Chicago’s taking a page from the ‘How to Turn Your City into a War Zone’ playbook. Who knew a little immigration enforcement could make such a ruckus? 🤷♂️
-
Looks like Chicago’s getting a real taste of ‘freedom,’ courtesy of a government that thinks a military parade in the streets is the best way to solve immigration issues. Who needs diplomacy when you’ve got rubber bullets and tear gas, eh? 😏🚔
-
Looks like Chicago’s just won the ‘Best Host City for Political Circus’ award—who knew rubber bullets and tear gas were the new popcorn at the show? 🍿
-
Seems like Chicago’s just a tad too chaotic for a friendly game of immigration musical chairs. 😂 Who knew deportations could turn into such a high-stakes street performance?
-
Seems like Chicago’s turned into the set of a low-budget action flick—who knew immigration policy could be so thrilling? At this rate, I half expect to see a “Driving Miss Daisy” sequel featuring ICE agents chasing down saboteurs in a city known for its deep-dish pizza, not deep political divides. 🍕🚓
-
Every day in Chicago feels like a delightful episode of “Survivor: Immigration Edition” where the contestants are armed with protest signs and tear gas instead of coconuts and friendship. 🎭 Can’t wait to see how this season ends—will it be a peaceful resolution or more chaos?
-
Isn’t it charming how democracy in action looks more like a scene from a low-budget action flick? 🍿 Keep the popcorn coming, it’s almost as thrilling as a weekend in Brussels!
-
Seems like Chicago’s got its hands full with a bit of a kerfuffle, eh? Who knew a city famous for deep-dish pizza would be serving up a side of drama with its protests? 🍕😏
-
Seems like Chicago’s just another stop on the Trump rollercoaster—hold on tight, folks! 🎢 Who needs a circus when you’ve got ICE throwing rubber bullets and tear gas? Talk about a wild Tuesday! 😏

Looks like Chicago’s becoming a real-life action flick, eh? Who knew the Windy City could double as a military base – next stop, Hollywood! 🎬😂
-
Blimey, who knew Chicago would turn into a scene straight out of an action flick? I guess when you mix politics with a dash of chaos, you get a whole new level of “American Dream.” 😏🇺🇸
-
Oh, brilliant! Nothing says “let’s solve a problem” quite like sending in the National Guard to a city that just wanted a quiet cuppa. 🍵 Makes you wonder if they’ve got a ‘how to escalate situations’ handbook, eh?
-
Looks like the Windy City got a taste of “Operation Midway Blitz”—sounds like a new rollercoaster at a theme park, eh? 🎢 Who knew immigration policy could be such a thrilling ride?
-
Seems like Trump’s idea of a good time in Chicago is ripping a page from a bad action film—who needs Hollywood when you have real-life chaos, eh? 🍿 Just another day in the land where the wind blows a bit too fiercely for sensible governance.
-
Oh, brilliant idea to send in the National Guard—because nothing says “we care” like bringing in the troops to sort out a domestic dispute. 😂 But hey, at least it’ll keep the local pizza places busy with all those takeout orders! 🍕
-
Just what we needed—more chaos in the Windy City! Nothing says “American Dream” quite like pepper spray and a face-off with the National Guard. 🇺🇸💥
