Anderlecht (Brussels Morning Newspaper): On New Year’s Eve in Kuregem, Anderlecht, 30 people were arrested amid violence, including attacks on police, highlighting ongoing community issues.
In Kuregem, Anderlecht, there were some fires, including a Christmas tree and cars, which led to around 30 people getting arrested for setting off fireworks. Those who were arrested were not kids, and all the arrests happened in Kuregem, showing the mayor was right to focus on this area. Before 10 p.m., many young people were out for celebration, but no one was taken in because community guards sent them home. After 10 p.m., a group of adults clashed with police, ignoring the curfew and attacking emergency services with Molotov cocktails.
What measures can address violence and community issues in Kuregem?
This New Year’s Eve saw an increase in violence, especially in areas like Kuregem, Vorst, and Sint-Gillis, where people used Molotov cocktails. Some individuals set fires to attract emergency services and then ambush them. While there were fewer incidents and arrests than in past years, many locals felt that not much had changed, as they still dealt with fireworks and drug issues, along with a noticeable lack of police presence.
Ouamara feels that the neighbourhood only gets attention during the holidays, and it’s usually for negative reasons, especially with young people being blamed. He points out that there are no libraries, sports halls, or places for the community to gather. He also mentions serious problems like drug dealing and bad housing that need to be fixed even after New Year’s. He believes having more local police who can connect with the youth would help. The mayor agrees that drug dealing is a big issue but says they are limited in resources, with many areas needing help.
