“In light of the country’s delicate circumstances, to prevent Syrian bloodshed, preserve Syrian territorial unity, and ensure the safety of its people, the Syrian Arab Republic’s Presidency announces a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire,” read a statement shared on Telegram by the Syrian presidency on Saturday.
Netanyahu commented on the situation, asserting in a recorded statement, “This ceasefire is achieved through strength. Not through appeals or begging — through strength.”
The U.S.’s Barrack indicated that the agreement is backed by Turkey, Jordan, and neighboring countries.
“We urge Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to lay down their arms and, along with other minorities, create a new, united Syrian identity, fostering peace and prosperity with its neighbors,” Barrack stated in a post early Saturday.
In Syria’s southern Sweida region, a clash between the Druze minority and other tribes has claimed hundreds of lives in the past week. Israel intervened by launching strikes on Damascus and southern Syria, pledging to protect the Druze community, also located in Israel and Lebanon.
On Friday, Israel consented to Syria deploying troops to the Sweida region for 48 hours to end the conflict, as reported by Reuters, citing an Israeli official.
