SANTA BARBARA – The Bulgarian satellite “Balkan-1” has been successfully launched into orbit to support the European Union’s “Copernicus” program. Developed by the company “EnduroSat,” the satellite was sent into space aboard a SpaceX “Falcon 9” rocket from a launch site in Santa Barbara, California.
This satellite marks a significant milestone as it is Bulgaria’s first fully scientific satellite designed for both research and security purposes, as stated by Lyubomir Toshev from EnduroSat in an interview with BTA.
“Balkan-1” is capable of monitoring maritime areas and vessels, assisting in disaster response, creating maps, and overseeing coastal zones and essential infrastructure. It is equipped with sensors that can analyze the presence of various chemicals and elements in both water and soil, Toshev added.
The EU’s “Copernicus” program plays a crucial role in environmental monitoring and is a vital component of the European civil protection system. (14.01.2025)
