BRUSSELS – By 2025, Bulgaria is projected to be the third-largest in the European Union for newly installed battery energy storage capacity, holding a 9 percent market share, following Germany and Italy, as per the annual report from the European solar association (SolarPower Europe), according to the Association for Production, Storage and Trading of Electricity.
After having roughly 200 MWh of installed capacity in 2024, Bulgaria is expected to reach nearly 2500 MWh by the end of 2025. There are forecasts that this year the capacity could increase four to five times, with over 10,000 MWh of batteries currently being developed in the country, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
This growth in Bulgaria occurs during a record-breaking year for the EU, which saw the installation of over 27 gigawatt-hours of new batteries, representing a 45 percent increase from the previous year.
In 2025, Bulgaria will also launch the first gigafactory for battery systems in Europe, which has been granted strategic status under the European net-zero industries regulation. This positions Bulgaria among the few EU nations that both deploy and manufacture essential technologies for the energy transition, according to the Association for Production, Storage and Trading of Electricity.
For Bulgaria, the energy transition is primarily an economic matter rather than merely a climate objective. It enhances industrial competitiveness, draws in investments, and helps maintain jobs, stated Nikola Gazdov, chairman of the association.
