Britain’s Brexit Negotiator Rejects Rejoining EU Customs Union

Britain’s top foreign minister, Yvette Cooper, on Wednesday supported a strict limit on the number of entrants under a youth mobility scheme. She stated in an interview that the scheme needs to be “balanced.”

“The UK-EU relationship is crucial and is undergoing a reset, with cooperation on various issues,” she said. “We must ensure migration is properly managed and controlled.” A U.K. official clarified that Cooper wants an overall cap on numbers.

As negotiations advance to the political level this week, Thomas-Symonds outlined plans for a prospective Britain-EU summit in Brussels when appropriate. “Regarding the date, I want us to have made enough progress to demonstrate that at a summit,” Nick Thomas-Symonds said.

He added, “The original [post-Brexit] Trade and Cooperation Agreement did not adequately cover services. We aim to advance areas like mutual recognition of professional qualifications.”

Thomas-Symonds, a strong pro-European in the government, told POLITICO he had established a good relationship with “Maroš” (Šefčovič) and even gifted him a Christmas bottle of House of Commons whisky. “There’s undoubtedly a trajectory towards closer UK-EU cooperation,” he quipped.

Dan Bloom and Esther Webber contributed reporting.

Oh brilliant, just what we need—another round of negotiations over a youth scheme while we’re still figuring out the last Brexit hangover! 🍻 I suppose “balanced” means making sure we don’t have too many eager young folk spoiling the party, eh?

So, Yvette’s idea of “balance” sounds awfully like keeping the doors shut while waving at the neighbors, eh? Classic British diplomacy—who needs friends when you can have a solid gate! 😂

Looks like Yvette’s keeping the youth in check – who knew the customs union was just a posh way to say “no entry, mate”? 🤷‍♂️ Cheers to more “balanced” negotiations, whatever that means! 🍻

Oh, brilliant! Looks like they’re planning a summit to discuss how to dance around the issues like a couple of high school kids at prom. Don’t worry, folks, I’m sure they’ll figure out the perfect number of youth to still call it a “balance.” 😂

  5. So, Yvette thinks a “balanced” youth mobility scheme will solve all our problems, eh? Maybe we should just toss in some fish and chips to really seal the deal! 🍟🇬🇧

  6. Fancy that, a youth mobility scheme with limits – because who needs young blood wandering around freely, eh? 🍷 Makes perfect sense, just like a British summer: always cloudy with a chance of more paperwork!

Nothing screams “let’s collaborate” quite like a generous cap on youth mobility, eh? Guess we’re all in for a jolly old game of ‘how few can we let in’? 😂

Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—more caps and limits while the rest of Europe sips their espresso and carries on. Cheers to a “balanced” future! 🍷

Oh, fantastic! Nothing says “let’s work together” like a whisky gift and a strict cap on young dreamers. Truly a masterclass in diplomacy, innit? 🍷😏

Oh, splendid! Just what we need—a limit on young folks visiting. Because who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned queue for the privilege of a holiday? 🕺🍻

Oh, brilliant move! Just when you thought the UK’s relationship with the EU couldn’t get any more “balanced,” they decide to treat youth mobility like it’s a limited edition holiday ale. 🍻 Cheers to the cap, eh?

Oh, splendid! Who needs a customs union when you can just have a “balance” of youth entering and exiting like it’s a trendy club in Shoreditch? 🍸 #ManagingMigration

Aye, nothing says “let’s play nice” like a Christmas whisky and a strict cap on youth, eh? Sounds like a proper love story in the making, innit? 🍷🇬🇧

Oh, splendid! A youth mobility scheme with strict limits—because nothing screams “let them in” like a “balanced” approach, right? 😂 Cheers to progress, or as we say in Blighty, it’s just another day in the circus! 🍻

Oh, lovely! A “strict limit” on youth mobility – because who needs fresh talent when you can have a cozy bureaucracy instead? 😂

  16. Looks like Yvette’s mastered the art of “let’s talk about it while doing sweet FA” – maybe someone should remind her that balancing isn’t just for tightrope walkers. 😂

Oh splendid, a cap on youth mobility—because what’s more fun than telling young people they can’t explore the continent? 😂 Guess we’re just keeping the “teenage wanderlust” in check while we figure out how to dance with the EU without stepping on our own toes.

Seems like Yvette’s got her hands full trying to balance youth mobility while keeping the doors firmly shut—who knew managing a relationship could be this complicated? 🧐 Cheers to a summit that might actually find a date, if only we could schedule one with less drama than a soap opera! 🍷

Oh, brilliant, just what we needed—more caps and limits! Next, they’ll start charging us for breathing the same air as the EU! 😂💼

  20. Just what we needed, a cap on youth mobility, because who doesn’t love a good queue at the border? 😏 Next up: a contest for the best “stay in your lane” slogan! 🎉
