Elon Musk has sparked a political storm in Germany after expressing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In an opinion piece published in Welt am Sonntag, the Tesla CEO described the AfD as the “last spark of hope” for the country. POLITICO’s Poll of Polls shows the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leading with 30 percent, followed by the AfD at 19 percent.
Musk’s endorsement has drawn sharp backlash from across the political spectrum. Lars Klingbeil, leader of the ruling Social Democrats (SPD), accused Musk of attempting to destabilize Germany, likening his actions to those of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Both Putin and Musk aim to see anti-democratic forces succeed in the elections, pushing Germany into chaos,” Klingbeil said in comments to Funke Mediengruppe.
Saskia Esken, another leading Social Democrat, alleged that Musk’s motives are purely financial. “He wants to become even richer,” she told Deutschlandfunk. “Everything he does is with that singular goal in mind.”
Friedrich Merz, the CDU’s lead candidate, also criticized Musk’s remarks, calling them “intrusive and presumptuous” in a post on social media.
Musk’s comments have ignited significant concern about foreign influence on domestic politics, particularly given the heightened tensions around the rise of far-right movements in Europe.
