Belgium, like Portugal, achieves EU winter gas reserve target

The Belgian gas network operator Fluxys has filled the underground gas storage in Loenhout with 7.745 terawatt-hours (TWh) of natural gas, reaching 92.1 percent capacity, according to the Gas Infrastructure Europe database. Portugal is the only country with a fully filled gas reserve. As of Tuesday morning at 6 AM, the EU’s overall gas reserves are 72.3 percent full, totaling 820.48 TWh.

Many EU nations possess greater storage capacity than Belgium, resulting in longer fill times. Germany, with nearly 250 TWh of storage capacity, has its reserves at 65 percent. Other countries with notable storage levels include Italy (83.6 percent), the Netherlands (60.8 percent), France (80.8 percent), and Austria (77.4 percent).

Since 2022, EU member states are required to fill their gas reserves to at least 90 percent by November 1 annually. This mandate was established to ensure adequate buffers following the supply challenges prompted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Gas storage facilities account for about 30 percent of winter consumption.

Looks like Belgium’s gas storage is almost full, how quaint! Meanwhile, Portugal’s just showing off—guess they really took that ‘fill her up’ motto to heart. 😂🔋

Looks like Belgium is trying to play catch-up with Portugal in the gas game, eh? 🎉 Let’s hope they don’t run out of room for all that “hot air” in their underground storage! 😂

Just splendid that Belgium has managed to cram in nearly 92% of gas – who knew we could fill up our reserves faster than a waffle at a Brussels café? 😏 Meanwhile, Portugal’s hoarding like a champion, proving once again that when it comes to gas, they’re not just about the sun and surf! 🏖️

Clearly, Belgium is giving a masterclass in gas storage—92.1% capacity, and still no crown jewels in sight. 😏 Meanwhile, Portugal is basically flaunting its full tank like a peacock in a tuxedo. Bravo, lads! 🍾

Looks like Belgium’s gas reserves are more filled than my fridge after a weekend shopping spree. 🙄 But hey, who needs competition when you’ve got Portugal showing everyone how it’s done, right? 😏

Looks like Belgium took a page out of the “how to fill your gas tank” manual—92.1% is practically overachieving! 🤦‍♂️ Meanwhile, Portugal’s just lounging in a full gas reserve like it’s a sunny beach holiday. 🌴

Typical Belgium, always just a tad late to the winter gas party, but hey, at least they filled it up a bit! Meanwhile, Portugal is sitting pretty with a full tank. 😂
