Freund, a German Green Party politician, recently sent a letter to the European Commission seeking clarification on whether the police investigation into Commissioner Reynders had any connection to his official duties.
In response, Ilze Juhansone, the Secretary-General of the Commission, clarified that Reynders’ official work was not implicated. She explained that areas like money laundering and financial crimes were previously overseen by the Commission’s finance directorate, not the justice department, which Reynders had recently led.
Juhansone further stated, “Obviously, the Commission stands ready to cooperate if the Belgian authorities make a request.”
Reportedly, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was unaware of the suspicions involving Reynders until an investigation by journalists from Le Soir and Follow the Money exposed the police raids.
As of now, the Commission has decided not to open its own investigation. Juhansone explained, “Since none of the allegations relate to misuse of the EU budget or the management of EU funds, no specific investigation has been initiated by the Commission at this stage.”
