Earlier this week, Politico reported that Belgian authorities have requested the lifting of immunity for five Members of the European Parliament. Some parliamentarians disclosed this information themselves, while other names were leaked from various sources. Although the Belgian judiciary did not comment, it was anticipated that President Metsola would announce the names during the plenary session on Wednesday, which she has now done without providing details on the reason behind the immunity request.
The five MEPs involved are Daniel Attard from Malta’s socialist party, Nikola Minchev from Bulgaria’s liberal group, and Italian conservatives Salvatore De Meo, Fulvio Martusciello, and Giusi Princi. “The requests have been sent to the legal affairs committee,” Metsola stated briefly.
The Belgian federal prosecutor’s office has been investigating corruption linked to lobbying efforts by Huawei for some time. According to their findings, corrupt activities have been taking place regularly and discreetly since 2021, disguised as commercial lobbying. These activities have included payments for political favors, lavish gifts, and expenses related to dining, travel, and invitations to sporting events.
