BASF Antwerp Eliminates 20 Lab Positions Amid 600 Staff Reduction

Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – BASF Antwerp will cut 20 of nearly 100 laboratory jobs. ABVV’s Jan Vlegels highlights the challenge of finding lab technician roles. Affected staff can choose severance or internal retraining.

As VRT News reported, laboratory workers at BASF’s Antwerp site were the first to hear about the company’s job cuts on Thursday, Oct 23, 2025. The chemical giant announced it will reduce 600 jobs at its Antwerp plant.

On Wednesday, Oct 22, 2025, BASF began information sessions on-site to explain the plans to employees. Even though the sessions have just started, the effects are already being felt in the laboratory. According to the socialist trade union ABVV, about 20 of the nearly 100 laboratory positions are expected to be cut.

How will BASF Antwerp’s 600 Job cuts impact lab workers?

Jan Vlegels from ABVV said the announcement offers “a small but clear glimpse” of the larger changes to the company. He mentioned that workers affected by the reductions will have a choice. They can take a severance package, which Vlegels called generous, or take part in retraining programs to move to other positions within BASF.

“It is very difficult to find a job as a laboratory technician in the chemical sector now,” Jan Vlegels from ABVV said.

Officials mentioned that finding a new job is not easy for the laboratory staff affected by BASF’s cuts. Union representatives say it is very hard to get a position as a lab technician in the chemical sector right now. Those who try to look outside the chemical industry often face lower pay, making the move difficult for many employees.

Jan Vlegels from the socialist trade union ABVV called BASF’s approach a “salami technique.” He explained that the company is reducing staff in small steps rather than all at once.

“They are doing it in slices. Management will probably make a similar announcement in another department next week,” he said.

He mentioned that BASF’s laboratory plays a key role in the company. Staff there carry out chemical tests on raw materials and finished products before they leave the plant.
BASF Antwerpen, the largest chemical company in Belgium, has announced plans to cut 600 jobs by 2028, which is nearly 16 % of the company’s total workforce. This job loss is solely part of an organisational cost reduction plan to achieve a €150 million annual reduction in fixed costs.

The company assures that no involuntary job losses are planned; the company will instead provide alternatives to involuntary job losses. If the current restructuring proceeds, the plans call for one-third of senior executives to be cut.

The latest announcement follows a cost savings initiative from November 2024 that cut costs in their entirety, with a target of achieving an annual €100 million in cost savings through outsourcing. The company clarifies that its expanded annual target has a legitimate basis for offering employee reductions.

Cutting 20 lab jobs out of 100 is just BASF’s way of telling us they believe in “efficient organization” – or as we like to say, “less is more!” 😂 Guess they’re hoping the remaining staff can magically do the work of two… or three. Cheers to that! 🍻

So, BASF’s decided to play a little game of musical chairs with 600 staff. Who knew job cuts could come with a side of “generous” severance? 😂

Seems like BASF’s new business model is “let’s cut jobs one slice at a time” – maybe they’re just trying to keep the suspense alive for their staff? 🍕💼

Typical BASF: slicing jobs like a fine cheese. Hope they keep the severance packages nice and generous for the lab techs – after all, who doesn’t love a good farewell gift? 🧀✌️

Just what we need, a “salami technique” with job cuts—because nothing says “progress” like slicing away at your workforce bit by bit. 🤷‍♂️ Cheers to the generous severance packages; at least that’ll buy a few pints while they ponder their next career move! 🍻

  8. Cuts in the lab? Sounds like BASF’s just trying to win the ‘most generous severance package’ award. Who needs job security when you can retrain for a role in a field that’s tighter than a pair of Euro trousers? 😂

Cutting 20 lab jobs out of 600 is like trimming the hedges while the whole garden is on fire, isn’t it? Who needs scientists when you can just guess the chemical formulas? 😂

Looks like BASF is perfecting the art of job cuts—call it the “salami technique,” slicing away at the workforce one piece at a time. Who needs lab techs when you can just retrain them for a cozy spot on the unemployment bench? 😏✂️

Seems like BASF is on a “keep it light” diet—20 lab positions here, 600 cuts there. Just a little snip-snip, nothing to worry about, right? 😂✂️

Cutting 20 lab jobs out of a mere 600? That’s just BASF playing chess with their workforce while the rest of us are still figuring out checkers. 🤷‍♂️ Who needs lab techs when you can just keep slicing that salami, right? 🥖

Looks like BASF is embracing the art of “job trimming” like a true connoisseur, slicing away at the workforce while serving up a “generous” severance like it’s a Michelin-starred dessert 🍰. Why tackle the elephant in the room all at once when you can nibble at its ears instead? 🤷‍♂️

Cutting 20 lab positions while claiming to stroll through a generous severance park? Classic BASF move—like a fine wine, it just leaves a bitter aftertaste! 🍷💼

Cutting 20 lab positions? Someone’s really going for the ‘lean and mean’ approach, aren’t they? 😏 Maybe they should just rename it to BASF: “Bringing A Slice of Frustration”.

Another day, another “generous” severance package from BASF – they really know how to slice the workforce like it’s a fancy charcuterie board, don’t they? 🍷✂️

Seems like BASF is going for the “less is more” approach—who needs lab techs when you can just throw money at the problem? 💸 #CorporateSlashing

Seems like BASF’s “generous” severance is just a fancy way to say, “Here’s your ticket out, cheerio!” Who needs lab techs anyway when you can run a chemical plant with a dash of whimsy and a sprinkle of risk? 😏💼

Looks like BASF really knows how to throw a “party” in Antwerp—600 staff cuts and a handful of lab positions to keep the “fun” going. Who needs stability when you can have a game of musical chairs with your job, right? 🎉✌️
