Automobile: Commission May Reevaluate 2035 Ban on Internal Combustion Engines

Stuttgart (Germany) – “Europe is prepared to utilize all options to ensure the success of the automotive industry,” stated Stéphane Séjourné at an automotive sector summit in Stuttgart, amid pressures from Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The commissioner, who also serves as the vice-president of the Commission, expressed the need to “adapt the path” towards energy transition “by allowing flexibilities.”

“Considering the international situation, some technologies may be permitted post-2035” to provide “a clear outlook for consumers anticipating changes in certain vehicle segments,” he noted.

Nonetheless, he declined to elaborate further until December 10, when the Commission is expected to announce measures to support the sector.

German car manufacturers, supported by the Chancellor, have criticized the EU’s deadline. Facing competition from China, they advocate for technologies such as range extenders and plug-in hybrid vehicles. (November 26, 2025)

  1. Oh great, just what we need—more “flexibility” in laws that were already as clear as mud! 🤔 Let’s see how many more years we can stretch this “energy transition” until we’re all driving electric tricycles! 🛴💨

Oh, brilliant! Just when we thought we could finally say goodbye to our beloved petrol guzzlers, here comes the Commission with a classic “let’s think about it, shall we?” move. Can’t wait to see what kind of techno-wizardry they cook up before everyone’s summer road trip! 🚗💨

  3. Oh, brilliant! So now we’re just going to keep the combustion engines ticking a bit longer, eh? As if the avant-garde of 2035 wasn’t already a laughable target with all the hybrid fuss. 🍻

Oh, brilliant, just what we needed—a little wiggle room for the combustion engines! Nothing screams “forward-thinking” like a last-minute U-turn in policy, eh? 😂🚗

  5. Oh, brilliant! Just what we need—another round of “let’s kick the can down the road” while the carmakers sweat it out. 🚗💨 Flexibility in policy? Sounds like they’re just trying to find a way to keep the engine revving without actually committing to an end date!

  6. Seems like the EU’s just realized that banning internal combustion engines might be a tad ambitious—who knew? 🚗💨 Flexibility in rules? What next, a Michelin star for the best “adaptable” car? 😂

  7. Looks like the EU is now playing a game of “let’s see how flexible we can be” while the Germans are just trying to keep their engines purring. 😂 Who knew saving the planet would be such a complex negotiation?

  8. So, let me get this straight: the EU might actually reconsider banning our beloved petrol-guzzlers? Talk about a twist, eh? 🚗💨 Who knew flexibilities would become the hottest new trend since… well, ever? 🥴
