Stuttgart (Germany) – “Europe is prepared to utilize all options to ensure the success of the automotive industry,” stated Stéphane Séjourné at an automotive sector summit in Stuttgart, amid pressures from Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The commissioner, who also serves as the vice-president of the Commission, expressed the need to “adapt the path” towards energy transition “by allowing flexibilities.”
“Considering the international situation, some technologies may be permitted post-2035” to provide “a clear outlook for consumers anticipating changes in certain vehicle segments,” he noted.
Nonetheless, he declined to elaborate further until December 10, when the Commission is expected to announce measures to support the sector.
German car manufacturers, supported by the Chancellor, have criticized the EU’s deadline. Facing competition from China, they advocate for technologies such as range extenders and plug-in hybrid vehicles. (November 26, 2025)
