Bashar Assad, the former president of Syria, has fled the country, according to a statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday. The announcement came after opposition forces took control of Damascus, the Syrian capital, encountering minimal resistance from Assad’s regime.
Following talks with the rebel forces who seized Damascus earlier that day, Assad reportedly “decided to resign from the presidency and left the country, instructing a peaceful transfer of power,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry revealed in a Telegram post. His current whereabouts remain uncertain, and unverified reports suggest he may have perished in a plane crash.
In light of unfolding events, Russia has called on “all parties involved to renounce the use of violence and to resolve all issues of governance by political means,” urging for a peaceful political resolution to the crisis.
