Haasrode (Eurotoday) – After an earlier delay, the zonal council has approved a revised and more budget-friendly plan for Kortrijk’s new fire station, which serves the 14 cities in the Fluvia fire zone.
The original proposal was shelved due to high costs. The updated version is approximately two million euros cheaper, thanks to a more modest and functional design.
Initially unveiled in February 2024, the project was paused soon after when the estimated cost of 26.6 million euros was deemed too high.
The project is now moving forward with a total cost of around 26 million euros. However, unlike the initial estimate, this figure now includes 1.5 million euros earmarked for foundations and structural stability work, meaning the actual building costs have been significantly reduced.
“The original plans included a large experience space,” said Francis Benoit (CD&V), chairman of the Fluvia zone.
“Visitors would be able to see how the fire department works. But we scaled back those ambitions.”
“We looked at how we could use the spaces as functionally as possible. As a result, we ultimately managed to eliminate the floor. Things that would have been nice to have have made way for what is absolutely necessary.”
Construction is now underway with an appointed contractor. If everything proceeds according to schedule, the new facility should be completed by the end of 2027. Once finalized, it will house the fire zone’s administrative operations as well as relocate the fire stations from Zwevegem and Kortrijk.
At the same zonal council meeting last Friday, the application for a new fire station at the VTI Gullegem site was also considered. Five million euros have been allocated for this development in Haasrode, Belgium.
Why was the fire station project initially delayed?
Fire safety is a critical element that must be integrated from the outset of any construction project. Overlooking these requirements in early planning stages often leads to delays, as costly retrofitting or design adjustments become necessary to meet legal and safety standards.
Securing approvals and permits from fire safety regulators and other oversight bodies can be a time-consuming process. Additional delays may occur due to changes in regulatory procedures or inconsistencies in official reviews.
Communication gaps between engineers, architects, fire safety consultants, and municipal authorities can further prolong planning and approval phases.
Finally, financial constraints or the need to revise designs to comply with safety regulations often contribute to significant project delays.

Looks like Kortrijk’s fire station is finally getting a makeover – who knew “functionally basic” could be the new luxury? 🏗️ At least we won’t be distracted by that pesky “experience space”; who needs to actually enjoy life when you can just fight fires? 😂

Oh joy, a “budget-friendly” fire station! Who knew cutting corners on a safety facility would make it more “functional”? 😅 Can’t wait for the grand opening of “Fire Station Lite” in 2027! 🏗️🔥

Oh, fantastic! We’ve managed to find a way to build a fire station on a budget—who knew cutting out the floor would save us so much? 😏 It’s not like we need a solid foundation for a fire station or anything, right?

Oh, fantastic! Nothing screams “cutting-edge fire safety” quite like a fire station that’s had its lavish plans burnt to a crisp—who knew functional meant no floor at all? 😂 Just what we need, a house without a proper foundation—perfect for a city that’s fire-fighting on a budget! 🔥🏠

Oh, how charming! A fire station built on a shoestring budget—just what every city needs, right? 😏 Let’s hope they saved enough to at least buy a fire extinguisher! 🔥🚒
