Antwerp (Eurotoday): Last New Year’s Eve, riots in Antwerp’s Kiel district led to about 60 arrests. Teacher Ibrahim Ben Mzair organized a mosque event for local youth to prevent trouble. Mayor Bart De Wever faced criticism for putting 51 young people under house arrest.
Last New Year’s Eve in the Antwerp district of Kiel, riots occurred between police and a group of young people. They attacked a police vehicle, stole bulletproof vests, and shot fireworks at officers. Local teacher Ibrahim Ben Mzair noted that they want to prevent such incidents from happening again in the neighborhood.
What activities are planned in Antwerp’s Kiel district to prevent New Year’s riots?
According to Ibrahim Ben Mzair, they have been talking to local youth and noticed there aren’t many activities for them on New Year’s Eve, which can lead to trouble. To help, the mosque will be open tonight on 31st December from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. for young people aged 14 to 25, working together with the Antwerp police. There will be lectures, a quiz, a FIFA tournament, and free food and drinks. Stewards will also be on the streets to make sure everyone gets home safely, aiming to keep the neighborhood calm.
Antwerp’s mayor, Bart De Wever, is facing a lot of criticism for putting 51 young people under house arrest to stop riots on New Year’s Eve. Youth workers say it’s better to give young people activities and show them what they can do. Alderman Patrick Jansens agreed with this idea. Ibrahim Ben Mzair said they don’t want to get into political arguments and just want to help the neighborhood.

Oh, great, a FIFA tournament to keep the kids out of trouble – because nothing screams “peaceful New Year’s Eve” quite like competitive gaming and free snacks! 🍕🎮 Let’s hope the fireworks are just in the game this time, eh?

Looks like Antwerp’s got a real festival of fun planned for New Year’s Eve! Nothing says “let’s prevent riots” quite like a mosque quiz and FIFA tournament 🍕⚽️—because when youth think ‘party,’ they definitely think ‘lectures!’ 🙄
