What happened in the Antwerp bike shop fire?
A bike shop in Antwerp caught fire, with numerous electric bikes inside. Police confirmed that the bike batteries exacerbated the fire. Fires involving batteries are particularly challenging to extinguish as they can reignite. Firefighters removed the bikes and submerged them in water to prevent flare-ups. Most of the damage is concentrated on the ground floor, with smoke damage affecting the apartments above. The bike shop is considered a total loss.
Residents of the apartments above the bike shop, as well as another apartment on Brialmontlei, are currently unable to return home. The Jewish Ambulance Service Hatzoloh is assisting those displaced. Samuel Markowitz, an alderman in Antwerp, commended the community’s solidarity. Local residents are providing shelter, and many have offered food and clothes. While some children who witnessed the fire remain frightened, they are receiving support to cope with the trauma.
