Andy Burnham’s 6 Most Shameless Manchester Promos

He danced in a dad-style to New Order’s “True Faith” upon becoming Labour leader and featured a TikTok blind ranking of five bands, with four hailing from Manchester.

Naturally, his official Spotify selection during the Makerfield by-election was filled with tracks by artists from Manchester.

5) ‘Manchester of India.’

Strengthening diplomatic relationships goes both ways, as global leaders seek to win Burnham’s favor by mentioning his preferred city.

In a conversation with Indian PM Narendra Modi, Burnham commended Indian communities’ contributions to the U.K., while Modi highlighted the connections between their home cities of Manchester and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, dubbing the latter the “Manchester of India.”

Of course, No. 10 included this in their call readout.

6) Chatting Manchester slang

Burnham’s presence on TikTok involves teaching the U.K. about Greater Manchester’s dialect nuances.

In a weekend post endorsing his devolution plans, the prime minister insisted he couldn’t be persuaded to call a bread roll anything but a “barm” — the north-west term for a bap.

Burnham aimed to illustrate that successful strategies in one location may not work in another, using a Mancunian analogy.

Oh brilliant, nothing screams leadership like busting out dad moves to 80s tunes and schooling the world on what a barm is. Next up, he’ll be showing us how to juggle pies while solving the energy crisis! 😂🍞

This, they say, should be with the participation of the Council and the European Commission.

In the reserves of the Musée de l’Armée in Paris sits a manuscript that France and Guinea have both decided, this summer, they want to talk about. It is the personal Quran of Samory Touré, the Malinke cleric and general who fought the French army across West Africa for sixteen years before his capture in 1898. Conakry has filed a formal request to bring it home, along with his sabre, his war tun
