The European Union (EU) is investing close to €422 million in 39 projects aimed at advancing alternative fuels infrastructure along the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). This funding is part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), a program dedicated to enhancing European transport infrastructure. The projects, selected under the 2024-2025 Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), are key to driving decarbonization efforts across the region.
Through this initiative, the AFIF will facilitate the deployment of approximately 2,500 electric charging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty vehicles along the TEN-T road network. It will also support the establishment of 35 hydrogen refueling stations for cars, trucks, and buses, the electrification of ground handling services at eight airports, green upgrades to nine ports, and two bunkering facilities for ammonia and methanol.

Next Steps
Following approval by EU Member States on February 4, 2025, the European Commission will finalize the award decision in the coming months. Upon completion, the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) will begin drafting grant agreements with the project beneficiaries.

Background
The second phase of the AFIF for 2024-2025 was initiated on February 29, 2024, with a total budget of €1 billion. This includes €780 million from the general envelope and €220 million from the cohesion envelope. The program aligns with the goals of the Regulation for the Deployment of Alternative Fuels Infrastructure (AFIR), which focuses on building accessible electric charging stations and hydrogen refueling facilities within key EU transport corridors and hubs. It also complements the objectives of the ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime regulations.
The call for proposals supports the roll-out of infrastructure for road, maritime, inland waterway, and air transport. This includes electric recharging stations, hydrogen refueling facilities, electricity supply for ports and airports, as well as ammonia and methanol bunkering stations.
The application process remains ongoing, with the next submission deadline set for June 11, 2025.
