Stockholm – The EU agency Euipo has issued a warning in a report regarding the significant volume of counterfeit food products in the market, particularly within e-commerce platforms.
Items such as cookies, candy, pasta, and chips frequently face manipulation, with alcoholic beverages also posing a substantial issue. This can range from fraudulent labeling and packaging to improper manufacturing methods.
In a joint operation conducted in 2024, Europol and Interpol confiscated counterfeit goods valued at 91 million euros.
Europol had previously cautioned in 2021 about the potential presence of hazardous substances, including methanol and mercury, in counterfeit food items.
“Counterfeit food and drinks are a major problem for public health,” stated Euipo’s Executive Director, João Negrão.
