Madrid – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, anticipates that the agreement regarding Gibraltar will be finalized by the end of October and implemented next year, leading to the demolition of the Fence once the ratification process is concluded.
In an interview on ‘RNE’, as reported by Europa Press, the minister stated, “The timeline we are considering, which we have communicated to the European Commission, indicates that the agreement will be drafted by the end of October.”
He noted that while the expectations are for the Fence to be dismantled next year, this depends not solely on Spain, as the Commission is responsible for drafting the text, which must also be ratified by the Council, the European Parliament, and the British Parliament.
“The Fence will be removed. Gibraltar will be linked to both the Schengen area and the Customs Union, with controls managed by the Spanish National Police and customs agents,” he elaborated, outlining key aspects of the agreement reached last June between Brussels and London after extensive negotiations.
“We will achieve indirect tax harmonization between Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar,” he asserted, describing it as “a significant qualitative leap for the Campo de Gibraltar and a tremendous opportunity,” and emphasized that “environmental standards will align with European environmental norms,” ensuring full protection for the rights of the 15,000 Spanish workers in Gibraltar.
Additionally, the minister announced his intention to appear on October 8 before the Plenary of the Congress of Deputies to provide details on the agreement. (September 4)
