The comments came as political turmoil reached its 14th day, with Albanians gathering in Tirana over the weekend for the largest protest so far, demanding the prime minister step down.
Saturday’s demonstration drew an estimated 100,000-200,000 participants. The event remained peaceful, with attendance by children, the elderly, families, and even included a space for children to create art.
In its second consecutive week, the protest evolved from objections to a Jared Kushner-linked luxury resort to one of the biggest anti-government rallies Albania has witnessed since the end of communism in 1991.
Rama described the protests as having a “fascist spirit,” suggesting they conveyed that Albania is for Albanians only, likening it to Germany’s “for the Germans” ideology, which eventually led to the country becoming Europe’s “black sheep” for many years.
Support for the “Flamingo Revolution” was planned to continue globally and in Tirana on Sunday, with gatherings scheduled in cities such as New York, Berlin, Vienna, and London.
