Over the past 24 hours, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported casualties and disruptions to aid operations at Headquarters in New York.
Efforts to assist the most vulnerable families persist during the cold, wet winter, despite a rescue mission for an injured person in Gaza City being denied.
Lack of shelter
“With a severe shelter shortage in the Strip, people are in partially or mostly damaged buildings to shield their families from the elements,” he stated.
Humanitarian partners reported that several buildings collapsed over the weekend due to stormy conditions, resulting in casualties.
Three-quarters of women-headed households urgently need shelter support, and two-thirds need clothing desperately.
Mr. Dujarric noted that UN partners continue working to improve access to dignified shelter for approximately 1.3 million people in Gaza.
Lift restrictions on aid entry
Last week, about 3,500 families affected by storms or residing in flood-prone areas received tents, bedding sets, mattresses, and blankets, while over 250,000 children were given winter clothing.
“However, our partners estimate 630,000 adolescents across the Strip still need winter clothing assistance,” he added.
“We and our partners again call for lifting all restrictions on aid entry into Gaza, including shelter material, as these constraints hinder humanitarian efforts during the cold winter.”
Meanwhile, humanitarians continue coordinating aid missions within Gaza, with half of Sunday’s attempts facilitated by Israeli authorities.
The teams collected six full fuel tankers, over 270 pallets of medical supplies, and essential food items from the Kerem Shalom/Karem Abu Salem and Zikim crossings.
