Brussels – René Aust, a German MEP from the AfD party, along with other members of the right-wing Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group, have expressed their desire for an engagement with Donald Trump at the European Parliament. They have sent a letter to Parliament President Roberta Metsola, requesting that she invite the soon-to-be US President to address the plenary session in Strasbourg.
The letter, which was shared with the German Press Agency, emphasizes that Trump’s presence in Europe would represent a significant commitment to strengthening transatlantic ties. It highlights the importance of approaching the partnership with the USA “after the challenges faced under the Biden administration” with an attitude of openness and dialogue.
Concerns Among Other Political Groups
However, various political factions have expressed apprehensions regarding Trump’s impending presidency and the conclusion of Joe Biden’s administration, which has been viewed as pro-transatlantic. There are worries that Trump might halt military aid to Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia and potentially push the country into negotiations that could require substantial concessions. Additionally, there are fears that economic relations between the EU and the US could once again deteriorate, reminiscent of the tensions experienced during Trump’s first term.
No Immediate Response from Metsola
The letter was co-signed by Aust and Polish politician Stanislaw Tyszka, who serve as co-chairs of the ESN group, along with AfD member Christine Anderson, who is part of the group’s board.
As of now, there has been no public response from Parliament President Metsola concerning the letter. Her team stated that Metsola reviews all proposals made by different groups, noting that there is already an open invitation extended to the current US President, which remains valid. (15.11)
