82-Year-Old Defrauded, Impostor Posing as Bank Employee Arrested in Mechelen

Mechelen (Eurotoday): Rivierenland police report six scams targeting seniors by fake bank staff, leading to the arrest of a young man posing as a worker.

Six reports were received by police of the Rivierenland on elderly victims last night. Elderly people who were being targeted by the scammers portraying themselves as bank employees or police reported the cases. They convinced their victims that some problems were happening with their accounts and that urgent attention was necessary to deal with the situation. In one case, an 82-year-old woman was convinced to meet the scammer, saying he had come there to help her with banking issues. This led to a 21-year-old man visiting her home under pretenses.

What measures are being taken to protect seniors from scammers in Mechelen?

A scammer visited an elderly woman and tricked her into giving him her bank cards and PIN codes, claiming it was necessary to solve fake problems. Dirk Van de Sande, a spokesperson for the Rivierenland police, said this case is part of a worrying trend that targets older people. Police are warning everyone to be careful about unexpected calls or visits from people pretending to be from banks or police. They advise checking identities before taking any action.

A young man pretending to be a bank worker was caught after trying to trick an inspector. When the inspector opened the door, he quickly ran away but was arrested in the hallway. He was wearing a Bpost Bank polo shirt and acted badly towards the police. Officials warn that real police and bank workers never ask for personal bank information like this. They suggest checking the ID of anyone claiming to be from the bank or police. The ID should have a police logo and the officer’s name on it.

Oh, brilliant! An 82-year-old lady gets swindled by a kid in a polo shirt—guess that’s what they mean by “youth empowerment” in Mechelen. Next up, we’ll have them handing out “banking 101” classes to our seniors! 🙄💸

Isn’t it charming how our 82-year-olds are still the target of the newest “banking trends”? 🤦‍♂️ I suppose getting scammed is just the latest way to “stay in touch” with modern finance, eh?
