Elon Musk Criticized by UK Health Minister Over Comments on Child Exploitation Response
“Elon Musk is an American citizen and perhaps ought to focus on issues on the other side of the Atlantic,” UK Health Minister Andrew Gwynne remarked during an interview with LBC radio on Friday.
Gwynne’s statement came in response to Elon Musk’s sharp critique of how British authorities have handled cases of child sexual exploitation. The billionaire entrepreneur has publicly expressed frustration, particularly targeting the Labour Party for its decision to reject a national inquiry into abuse scandals in northern England. Musk also directed criticism at Prime Minister Keir Starmer, pointing to his tenure as head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) from 2008 to 2013.
On his social media platform X, which he owns, Musk stated: “In the U.K., serious crimes such as rape require the Crown Prosecution Service’s approval for the police to charge suspects. Who was the head of the CPS when rape gangs were allowed to exploit young girls without facing justice? Keir Starmer, 2008-2013.”
The demand for a national inquiry into so-called “rape gangs” was echoed on Thursday by Britain’s main opposition party, the Conservatives, which, despite now calling for such measures, similarly refused to initiate one during its 14 years in power prior to being voted out in July.
Addressing the matter, Gwynne dismissed Musk’s critical portrayal of the situation. He pointed to multiple localized investigations into child sexual exploitation as well as a comprehensive national inquiry. The far-reaching Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, which concluded its work and published findings in 2022, was cited as an example of efforts made to tackle the issue.
The debate surrounding Musk’s comments highlights the tensions between his outspoken social media presence and the sensitivity of domestic political issues in countries outside the United States.
