Advocacy Groups Call for Stricter Fireworks Regulations Amid Rising Concerns
Injuries and aggressive misuse of fireworks continue to ignite heated debates across Europe. Nathalie Debast, a spokesperson for an advocacy group, highlighted the persistent dangers in a conversation with POLITICO. “Year after year, we see casualties and people sustaining injuries to their arms and legs,” Debast stated. “Alarmingly, fireworks are increasingly being used as weapons to attack emergency workers and police officers, leading to significant escalation.”
Even in Brussels, where local authorities had implemented a fireworks ban, the New Year’s celebrations were marked by violations. Several firecrackers and flares were detonated in the city center, contributing to a chaotic evening that saw 159 arrests and police responding to over 1,700 incidents across the Belgian capital.
Advocating for a more coordinated approach, VVSG, the Flemish mayors’ association, has called for a pan-European ban on fireworks sales. Such a measure, they argue, would prevent individuals from skirting local bans by purchasing fireworks across borders.
However, not everyone is on board with an EU-wide prohibition. Ann de Greef, the director of the animal rights organization GAIA, expressed skepticism. “When politicians say Europe has to address an issue, it often serves as an excuse for inaction within individual member states,” she told POLITICO.
De Greef emphasized the devastating toll fireworks take on animals. “Once again, we’ve seen heartbreaking incidents on New Year’s Eve. A dog was killed, a cow suffered a heart attack, and horses died—all because of fireworks. Enough is enough. I hope Belgium will finally implement a nationwide ban.”
The responsibility now lies with the Belgian government, de Greef added, pointing out that the advocacy effort has yet to secure substantial action. Meanwhile, VVSG revealed it has contacted Belgian officials to address the issue but plans to step up its efforts. The association intends to collaborate with partner organizations in neighboring countries, as well as major bodies like the European Committee of the Regions and the European Parliament, to press for stricter regulations.
As discussions on fireworks bans continue to spark debate, the calls for safety, accountability, and humane considerations are urging governments at all levels to take decisive action.
