Elon Musk — a prominent ally and financial backer of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump — has once again drawn attention by sharing a controversial documentary with his 210 million followers on the social media platform, X, which he owns.
The documentary features Tommy Robinson, one of the U.K.’s most high-profile far-right figures. Robinson, known for his provocative demonstrations in London often attracting thousands of supporters, is a former member of the far-right British National Party and unsuccessfully ran for the European Parliament in 2019.
Previously, Robinson was successfully sued for libel by a schoolboy and his family. Lawyers representing the family cited the “devastating effect” Robinson’s false claims had on their lives, forcing them to relocate their home.
Musk’s promotion of the documentary marks another controversial foray into British politics. The tech billionaire has been outspoken in his criticism of the U.K.’s Labour Party, which came to power last year. Musk has described the U.K. as a “tyrannical police state” and predicted “civil war is inevitable,” particularly as the country faced violent unrest this past summer.
Musk’s apparent endorsement of Robinson poses a potential issue for Nigel Farage and his right-wing populist party, Reform UK, which has been working to distance itself from the more extreme elements of the far-right in Britain. Interestingly, Musk has shown support for Farage’s party, even meeting with the Reform UK leader at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in December.
These incidents follow a pattern of Musk engaging with far-right politics internationally. In Germany, he caused an uproar after expressing support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, referring to it as the country’s “last spark of hope.”
With his influence spanning continents and his political endorsements sparking backlash, Musk’s moves continue to deepen his entanglement in the world of polarizing global politics.
