Always Look on the Bright Side of Life — Why 2025 Could Be a Better Year

Europe’s Moment of Reckoning

Europe may once again find itself grappling with the drama of a Donald Trump presidency—complete with fiery all-caps tweets, NATO withdrawal threats, and tariff saber-rattling. Yet, within this turbulence lies an opportunity: could this be Europe’s wake-up call to finally take charge of its own destiny? For years, European leaders have talked about strategic autonomy and sharing the burden of their own defense. Now is their chance to put those words into action and loosen the apron strings for good.

True, growing up is bound to be painful—analogous to the discomfort of a baby cutting its first teeth. But Trump’s potential return to the White House might provide exactly the jolt Europe needs to shake itself out of its self-imposed inertia. The challenge is immense, as Eurasia Group’s Europe expert Mujtaba Rahman points out. Tackling critical issues like security, defense, migration, and fiscal policy—deeply tied to national sovereignty—has always been difficult for the EU to address collectively.

Pooling sovereignty on these sensitive areas could indeed stoke the fires of populism and political division. Yet we can remain hopeful—surely a harmonious convergence of minds between Ursula von der Leyen, Viktor Orbán, Giorgia Meloni, Robert Fico, Emmanuel Macron, and others is just around the corner, right?

A Shift in Climate Strategy: Adaptation Over Mitigation

Let’s be honest: net zero was always an overly ambitious fantasy. By next year, more nations are likely to embrace the pragmatic alternative—focusing on reducing their vulnerability to extreme weather and the tangible impacts of climate change, rather than clinging to utopian mitigation targets. In other words, build better, enjoy that steak, and keep indulging in fast fashion retail therapy.

If anything, COP29 was a resounding success by injecting a much-needed dose of realism into global climate discussions. And for that, we have Azerbaijan’s autocratic leader Ilham Aliyev to thank. His actions helped derail the conference, shining a light on the futility of repeatedly unmet climate goals. Who really wants to risk being stranded hundreds of miles from a charging station, after all? Aliyev has a point—fossil fuels, in his words, are a divinely given resource.

Yes, some low-lying islands may disappear beneath the waves, but let’s face it—most people would struggle to locate them on a map even now.

Trump, Musk, and the Chaos to Come

Still skeptical that 2025 could outdo 2024 in terms of drama? Enter Trump and Elon Musk, a duo primed to deliver a spectacle of epic proportions. The Mutually Assured Disruption between these two larger-than-life figures promises to be a show like no other.

History tells us that a kitchen isn’t big enough for two master chefs—just ask Gordon Ramsay and Marco Pierre White. Imagine, then, the combustible chaos of two presidents effectively battling for control of the Oval Office. One thing’s for certain: watching Trump and Musk play out their power dynamic will be nothing short of deliciously chaotic.

While chaos, division, and perhaps even absurdity seem to be on the horizon, perhaps this upheaval will also bring about progress. Whether it’s Europe stepping into its own, a sobering climate reckoning, or a front-row seat to the Trump-Musk show, 2025 holds the promise of unparalleled intrigue.

Oh, splendid! Just when we thought 2024 couldn’t be any more of a circus, here comes 2025 with its own two-ring extravaganza starring Trump and Musk. 🍿 I do hope they serve popcorn at the EU summit while they’re at it; we’ll need something to munch on while we watch the continent finally grow up—like a teenager discovering the joys of independence, but without the parental guidance.

Oh, splendid! Nothing like the potential return of Trump and his tweeting escapades to finally convince Europe to grow up and stop relying on Uncle Sam’s apron strings. 🤦‍♂️ Cheers to a year of delightful chaos—might as well pop the popcorn and watch the circus unfold! 🍿
