Russia and Ukraine, currently engaged in a prolonged conflict, conducted a major prisoner exchange on Monday involving approximately 300 individuals, in a deal facilitated by the United Arab Emirates.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism following the exchange, stating, “The return of our people from Russian captivity is always very good news for all of us.” His remarks were shared via a social media update.
According to the Russian defense ministry, each side repatriated 150 prisoners. However, Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine had secured the return of 189 nationals, which included military personnel such as soldiers, servants, and officers, as well as two civilians who were captured in Mariupol. The Ukrainian leader confirmed the United Arab Emirates’ role in brokering the agreement.
