Bratislava – Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has voiced his opposition to U.S. President Joe Biden’s recent decision allowing the use of long-range American missiles against targets within Russia. He has instructed both the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár, and the Minister of Defense, Robert Kaliňák (both from Smer-SD), to refrain from supporting this initiative. This was reported by the Press and Information Department of the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic.
Fico stated, “This represents an unprecedented escalation of tensions; it undermines the prospects for initiating peace talks and halting the ongoing conflict among Slavs in Ukraine.” He also noted that Biden’s decision will have considerable implications for the incoming administration of President Donald Trump and anticipates that opposition lawmakers will express a clear disapproval of the decision.
The Prime Minister expressed his astonishment at the swift approval of the U.S. decision by several European Union (EU) countries. He argued that this reaction illustrates the EU’s inability to establish significant foreign policy stances on its own and suggests a Western inclination towards prolonging the war in Ukraine.
On Monday, ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, EU Chief Diplomat Josep Borrell expressed hope that member states would come together to permit Ukraine to utilize long-range missiles to strike targets in Russia.
American media outlets reported on Sunday that President Biden has authorized Ukraine to use long-range missiles supplied by the U.S. to hit targets in Russia, although the White House has yet to confirm this information officially. (November 18)
