Bratislava – On Monday, December 16, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico engaged in a phone conversation with the President of the European Council, António Costa. Fico expressed his appreciation for Costa’s proactive approach in negotiating the draft conclusions of the European Council ahead of the scheduled meeting on December 18 and 19, as reported by the press office of the Slovak Government Office.
Fico emphasized Slovakia’s commitment to preserving gas transit routes between Ukraine and EU member states.
“The maintenance of transit cannot just be a bilateral matter of the countries neighboring Ukraine, but a concern for the entire EU,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that he would discuss the transportation of gas to Slovakia through Ukraine during a phone call with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal later that evening.
Additionally, Fico reiterated Slovakia’s support for the enlargement of the European Union to include new members, highlighting Serbia’s significant role in addressing illegal migration as deserving special backing.
He insisted on the importance of an objective assessment of the current situation in Georgia, declaring that any consideration of intervening in Georgia’s internal affairs by imposing sanctions is unacceptable. Fico also plans to address the issue of perceived double standards regarding the rule of law among different EU member states during the upcoming discussions.
